At the dawn of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s — when no one knew how the disease spread and the diagnosis was considered terminal — a courageous group of nurses and caregivers at San Francisco General Hospital took ground-breaking and controversial steps to create a new unit devoted to caring for patients diagnosed with AIDS, and in doing so, helped develop a new standard of care.
