Weekly Update - September 19, 2024

HEAT: How to Reduce Health Risks

In the news and this weekly post, we shared information and article after article about the extreme temperatures here and in many other states this year. We are in September, when fall should bring us cooler temperatures, foliage changes, and pumpkin-flavored everything in stores. Yet Arizona is still experiencing hotter than usual temperatures. We were planning to talk more about this topic today, and soon after submitting the September 16th post, we received several more alarming articles about extreme heat, indicating our plan was on target. One such post we received comes from Conversations on Health Care, and their latest discussion entitled How to Reduce Health Risks When September Temps Reach 100+ was spot on and provided us with the information we wanted to share with you. Please listen to this critical discussion and share your questions and experiences with your patients with us [EMAIL US HERE]. Consider joining the speaker's bureau (below) if this topic interests you and you would like to learn more about it and become more involved in this health topic.

Speakers Bureau: Extreme Heat

Are you interested in discussing extreme heat?  Our partner, the Alliance of Nurses for Health Environments (ANHE), is working with the Climate Action Campaign to create a list of Arizona nurses and health professionals who could speak to the media about extreme weather and how it has impacted our care for patients or patients who have been affected by extreme weather.  We are collecting names now; if you are interested, please email us at aznacchworkgroup@gmail.com.

Voting Rights Checkup: Vote.gov

From our friends at Climate Hawks Vote:

You take your kids to the doctor for a checkup. You take your car in for a checkup.

Now it’s time for a voting rights checkup! Check your registration. It’s quick and easy. And it’s essential for a livable climate, family and friends, and American democracy.

Check yourregistration.

Vote.gov is an official website of the United States government —and was recently recommended by none other than Taylor Swift. It will link you to your own state’s voter registration portal. Even if you’re sure you’re registered, check. If you’ve moved in the last few months or need to re-register, you can do so quickly from the same site.

Once you have completed your checkup, please share this message with five others and ask them to pass it on, too. That way, all voters will be ready to vote in this year's election.

What We Are Reading & Listening to this Week

**When you read this, we will be nearing 110 consecutive days of 100-degree-plus heat in the Phoenix area. From the most recent AZ Climate Weekly, here, read about this record weather event.
