Nurse’s Week
During Nurse’s Week LinkedIn hosted a webinar “Nurses’ Roles to Address Climate Change” and it is recorded to watch now. It is one of the best presentations, by nurses for nurses we’ve seen this year. We recommend you set aside some time to watch this panel of nurses delve into healthcare as an industry that has one of the world’s largest carbon footprints, yet there are steps we can take to decrease our impact on climate change. Holly Carpenter of the American Nurses Association; Cara Cook, MS, RN, AHN-BC of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments; Teddie Potter, PhD, RN, FAAN of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing; and Elizabeth Schenk of Providence, all of whom have done significant research and work in this area provide nurses with resources and ideas to be part of the climate change solutions.

Clean Air Month
May is Clean Air Month, sponsored by the American Lung Association (ALA) since 1972. Clean Air Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the improvements in air quality since the passage of the 1070 Clean Air Act and, to build awareness of action remaining. The 2024 ALA’sState of the Air Report is now available.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Biden administration also finalized several rules to further address air pollution.Click hereto learn more about the newly mandated reductions in pollutants and the health benefits and saved lives these reductions will bring.
Action Item
From Health Professionals for Climate, action is being requested of health care professionals as Congress begins to address farm policy. Upcoming farm policy could pit programs like SNAP and important conservation initiatives against each other for funding. Both nutrition and clean water, soil, and air, are vital for health and should be prioritized. Read more and take action here.

Air Quality Awareness Week
May 6-10
The theme for this year is, “Knowing Your Air”. Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW) highlights resources that increase air quality awareness and encourage people to act and incorporate air quality knowledge into their daily lives.
AQAW 2024 Daily Topics:
From our colleagues, The Arizona Health Professionals for Climate Action (AzHPCA): as temperatures climb, the air quality starts to suffer too. This week has already seen high levels of Ozone from the warmer temperatures mixing with volatile organic compounds from the consumption of fossil fuels.
Check the air quality on https://www.airnow.gov/ to view air quality levels.

Earth Day 2024
April 22nd
Today is Earth Day, a day to learn and act in support of our planet’s health. Here are some ideas and additional information is available on our website.
Tip 1: Eat Less Meat: About 40% of greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, deforestation, and poor land use practices.
Tip 2: Use Few Plastics: Avoid plastics like straws and single-use water bottles; use reusable bags at the grocery store and reusable water bottles.
Tip 3: Use Less Gas: Opt for biking, walking, public transportation, or carpooling to cut down on pollution from car travel.
Tip 4: Be Water Wise: Be water-conscious in your daily life. Turn off the water when brushing your teeth, use your dishwasher, fix leaks, and use drought-tolerant plants in your yard.
Tip 5: Inspire, Educate, and Advocate for a Healthy Earth: visit our website, continue reading our posts, and share learnings with others. We can all work together to save our planet, so it remains for future generations.

Nurses applaud First-Ever National Standards to Address PFAS in Drinking Water
The EPA finalized the first national drinking water limit on certain toxic PFAS (forever chemicals) in a historic move last week. Forever chemicals have been linked to health issues like low birth weight and certain cancers. Nurses helped educate, advocate, and signed petitions to the EPA to see these rules finalized. Thank you to nurses for supporting this important work. Together we can change policy and improve the planet’s health and our health too.
