Colorectal Cancer Screening Update & Case Study		7/27/2019	7/27/2019	10:15 AM	11:15 AM	7/27/2019 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM Presenter: Shelley Vaughn, DNP, FNP-BC The purpose of the presentation is to provide updated age screening recommendation for colorectal cancer as well as discuss relevant case study — teaching method 10-15-minute interactive discussion, not a 60 minute PowerPoint. The teaching style will be flipped classroom-based and with fast facts to engage the learner. It is imperative to review that many patients do not present with symptoms and that the younger age groups 20-40 are diagnosed late Stage once he/she has symptoms. It is essential to assist nurse practitioners in understanding how to use the stool tests as an option versus colonoscopy and evidence has demonstrated these options are better received than colonoscopy alone. The other test options can increase screening which can lead to earlier diagnosis and decreased cancer deaths. It is also important to note the pathology on the colonoscopy report to ensure appropriate colonoscopy follow up.
SGLT2 Inhibitors: What Role do They have on Cardiovascular Disease and Obesity		7/27/2019	7/27/2019	10:15 AM	11:15 AM	7/27/2019 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM Presenter: Sharon Morgan, DNP, FNP-BC T2DM individuals manifest a two- to threefold greater risk of CV events compared with counterparts without diabetes, and CV mortality is responsible for ∼80% of the mortality. In T2DM patients without MI, risk of CV death is similar to individuals without diabetes with prior MI. Most T2DM individuals manifest moderate-to-severe insulin resistance, which is associated with multiple metabolic abnormalities, i.e., obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, all of which are CV risk factors. This cluster of CV/metabolic disturbances is known as the insulin resistance (metabolic) syndrome and is the principal factor responsible for increased CV risk in T2DM. Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have a unique mechanism of action, which is independent of insulin secretion and insulin action. By inhibiting SGLT2 in the renal proximal tubule, they lower plasma glucose by producing glucosuria. This unique mechanism of action, in addition to lowering plasma glucose, corrects a number of metabolic and hemodynamic abnormalities that are risk factors for CVD. 60 minutes of pharmacy CE credit will be provided.

An abnormal CBC often shows early signs of many illnesses. These can range from iron deficiency anemia to leukemia, from autoimmune diseases to clotting disorders. This presentation will start with a quick review of hematopoiesis and move to a review of the components of the CBC. It will then give the NP tools to evaluate high and low cell counts in all three main cell lines (WBC, RBC, Platelets) and what diseases to consider in the differential diagnosis.

Cervical Cancer Screening and Sexual Health		7/27/2019	7/27/2019	11:25 AM	12:25 PM	7/27/2019 11:25 AM - 12:25 PM Presenter: Denise Link, PhD, RN, FAANP, FAAN Although the current cervical cancer screening guidelines have been in effect for several years, clinicians and patients alike may not be aware. There is recent evidence that after steady progress in the rate of women obtaining recommended cervical cancer screening, the rates are beginning to fall. The general public may not be aware of the close association between persistent HPV infection and risk for cervical cancer. The presentation will include information about expert panel clinical practice guidelines for both screening and management of cervical cytology and HPV testing. Research has demonstrated that clinicians do not initiate discussions about sexual health with their patients, and the patients are waiting for the clinician to start the conversation. An inquiry about sexual health should be part of the standard women’s health visit, especially in the case of potentially serious health conditions that may be related to a sexually transmitted virus. NPs who provide primary care for women have an obligation to provide women in their practice and in the community with access to recommended health screening and information about the importance of consistent healthy behaviors and follow up for care. 15 minutes of Pharmacy Contact Hours Available
Direct to Consumer Genetics: How to Use in Clinical Practice		7/27/2019	7/27/2019	11:25 AM	12:25 PM	7/27/2019 11:25 AM - 12:25 PM Presenter: Ken Wysocki, PHD, FNP, FAANP Approximately 250 direct to consumer (DTC) genetic tests are currently available to the public, but each is targeting a specific audience. This presentation explores questions about how the FDA regulates DTC companies, examines what the FDA considers “good manufacturing practice”, discusses Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited labs. Presenters will explore what is known about the reliability and validity of various DTC testing platforms, and discuss differences in clinical vs. DTC genetic testing. DTC genomics test results elucidate carrier status and disease risk. New tools for determining disease risk base on genomic test results continue to emerge utilizing DTC genetic raw data.

Thus many providers see patients who don’t know they are pregnant. Other complexities include populations who delay pregnancy until after 30, which increases risk of chronic disease and associated treatments, both of which can affect pregnancies and fetal outcomes. In addition, women while pregnant, are at greater risk for morbidity and mortality with certain conditions, so symptoms and treatment options can be different during pregnancy. With the challenges of busy practices and keeping up with research, data and standard of care, updates on medication safety in these populations is of value to providers and the patients they serve. 55 minutes of pharmacy CE credit will be provided.
