Award Categories

Rory Hays Advocacy Award

The Rory Hays Advocacy Award is presented to an AzNA member for significant contributions to nursing practice and health policy through political and legislative activity.

Rory Hays was the first lobbyist hired by the Arizona Nurses Association in 1989.  For over 27 years, Rory has set us on a path of successfully raising the visibility of nursing at the Arizona legislature.  Over the years, Rory taught thousands of nurses, not only the value of advocacy, but the nuts and bolts of how to do it.  She taught nurses how to transform soft nurse language into the firm voice of the respected healthcare experts that nurses are.  She coached, counseled, encouraged and sometimes cautioned us in our journey to propose, oppose or champion legislation that impacted the practice of nursing while promoting access to care and a healthy Arizona.

Florence Nightingale dedicated her life to the treatment of the sick and frail, changed the design of hospitals, and developed the field of preventive medicine.  Florence also enforced workplace safety, determined to stop contamination and the spread of infections and disease.  Her dream, dedication, and passion filled her lifelong commitment to speak out, educate, overhaul, and sanitize the horrendous healthcare conditions in England.
