Weekly Update - March 18, 2024

Last week we asked you to act by requesting the EPA to implement strong standards to cut pollution to promote clean air and protect our health.  (Take Action Here)

ACTION at WORK

On March 12th, our partners at the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) asked us to help at the Phoenix Route Zero Clean Care Standards Event to amplify our voice and urge the EPA to approve the strongest standards possible by the end of March.  Paloma Greenwald volunteered to represent nurses at the event.  Take a look at her phenomenal presentation. Her section starts at the 5:45 mark.

Notable NEWS

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently adopted rules to enhance and standardize climate-related disclosures by public companies and in public offerings. The SEC’s new rule is groundbreaking in that it requires public companies to make certain climate disclosures, mainly reporting greenhouse gas emissions, for the first time. Large public companies will be required to disclose their direct, or Scope 1 and Scope 2, emissions.

The FIVE Big Decisions That Really Matter

In a recent blog from Rewiring America, “Don’t sweat the small stuff. Start with these five swaps to get on the path to better (electric) living.” We were intrigued and thought we would share their BIG FIVE and get your take on them, are you inclined to adopt one or two of these suggestions? How many do you already have in place? Why or why not adopt these suggestions?  Let us know:  aznacchworkgroup@gmail.com

  • How you cook your food: induction cooking is the safest (and fastest) method for any menu.Homeowner/Renter
  • How you heat your home: heat pumps can keep your home temp comfortable in all seasons (AZ is ahead on this one, since most homes use these) Homeowner/Renter
  • How you heat your water: heat pump water heaters deliver hot showers without emissions. Homeowner/Renter
  • What kind of car you drive: Electric vehicles are more affordable now than ever before. Homeowner/Renter
  • Where your electricity comes from: Solar is a game-changer for households and communities. Homeowner/Renter

Marching Forward to Solutions

Entering March, we wait for the EPA to finalize standards to lower greenhouse emissions from automobiles. In April of 2023, the Biden Administration and the EPA announced draft standards to reduce greenhouse emissions from light- and medium-duty motor vehicles beginning in model year 2027. If enacted, these new standards will reduce air pollution from cars, while accelerating the manufacture and sale of zero-emission automobiles. The proposal builds upon EPA’s final standards for federal greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2023 through 2026.

Katharine Hayhoe’s most recent Substack post, reinforces why we need to get off fossil fuels and the good news is it is getting easier to do. Prices for electric home appliances like induction stoves and heat pumps are getting cheaper and better. IKEA even stocks these appliances as well as solar panels. Yet it is easy to get overwhelmed in the process of implementing a climate-friendly lifestyle.  Check out the Rewiring America handbook for help and share, share, share your actions so we learn and make these changes together.

Advancing Climate Health in Arizona

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter(PM2.5), commonly referred to as “soot” as it comes primarily from burning. These rules will curb the deadly air pollutant that significantly harms public health, causing premature death and decreased lung function, and that is responsible for more than 100,000 deaths in the United States every year EPA’s final air quality standards for PM2.5 lower the annual standards from 12 mcg/m3 to 9 mcg/m3, and will prevent up to 4,200 premature deaths and 270,000 lost workdays per year while bringing as much as $43 billion in net health benefits in 2032, when the standards are in full effect. (Sierra Club, Jan 7).

Let’s keep the momentum going, we need to ask President Biden and EPA Administrator Regan to enact the strongest carbon standards and air quality requirements for power plants by May 2024. The soot standard is a good start, but we need to reduce emissions from power plants too.

How Federal Investments in Safe Drinking Water Infrastructure

Are Improving Public Health

It’s been ten years since the health crisis in Flint, Michigan, where the city switched its water source resulting in improperly treated water, running through aging water pipes, many of which were lead pipes, into homes across the city, highlighting the negligence and harm caused by officials all to save money.  In a new report from the Center for American Progress, ‘Every single state in the country has at least 2,800 active lead lines, affecting nearly 22 million people in total, disproportionately people of color and those from low-income households.’ The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act makes a significant investment in clean drinking water by retrofitting and updating drinking water infrastructure across the United States. Under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a Lead Service Replacement Accelerators program in partnership with the US Department of Labor has been established.

Through the leadership of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) a letter to the EPA and undersigned by national and state nursing organizations like the American Nurses Association representing hundreds of thousands of nurses to thank the EPA for acting to address public health concerns around lead in drinking water AND to strongly urge EPA to quickly finalize the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) Improvements that prioritizes health-based standards. Access to safe drinking water is essential for families to live healthy and productive lives. EPA’s proposed improvements to the LCR are a step in the right direction as there is no safe level of lead.

ONLINE TRAINING

Climate Change Interventions

American Nurse

1.75 CE

At this crucial moment, amid COVID-19 recovery, our collective healing requires us to re-examine and remake our professional meaning and purpose toward improvements for the next generation of nurses. We suggest climate change activities as corporate social responsibility (CSR)—which aligns with nursing’s commitment to equitable and planet-safe health—for individual nurses, nurse managers, and leaders to influence and contribute within their organizations.

Takeaways:

  • The nursing profession must address climate change to protect and promote human health.
  • Climate change activities as corporate social responsibility provide a promising avenue to both scale successful organizational initiatives and to generate hope, transformative improvements, and renewed professional commitments for nursing.
  • Addressing climate change through corporate social responsibility is urgent and timely in the COVID-19 disaster recovery period for the nursing profession.
